Bezelmaker

The stone and the bezel, made to fit each other

A bezel only holds if it fits the stone: the strip long enough to go round it with a hair of play, high enough to reach over the curve of the dome and grip it, and no higher. Cut your own cabochon and the stone is part of the plan too.

Bezelmaker draws the stone's outline to trace and gauges to grind the dome against, works out the bezel strip from the stone's real shape, and shows the stone dropping in and the bezel being pushed over it in 3D.

What it does

  • The stone – oval, round, drop, marquise, cushion, heart or a shape of your own drawn by dragging points, in standard calibrated sizes or any size, in fifteen stones with their weight in carats.
  • The profile – the straight edge, the height and kind of dome from high and pointed to buff top, a bevel underneath, or a double cabochon domed on both sides.
  • The bezel – strip thickness and metal, how far it grips over the stone, the play, and a bearer strip inside to lift the stone.
  • Back plate and bail – plate thickness, a rim outside the bezel, an open back with a ledge for light, and a bail for a pendant.
  • Templates, 1:1 – the stone outline to trace, card dome gauges along and across, the bezel strip with the seam and the sides marked, the back plate with its saw line, and a 50 mm ruler to check that the print is true.
  • Step by step – from cutting and grinding the stone to soldering the bezel and pushing it over.
  • Files – SVG to print, STL of the stone, and your designs saved in the browser or as a file.

Beta

Bezelmaker is new. Check the first print against a ruler, and the strip round the stone, before you solder.
