Kintsugimaker

Broken, and more beautiful for it

Kintsugi mends what is broken with gold and lets the mend show. On a silver ring the cracks are drawn, engraved or sawn into the band and filled with gold wire, so the ring carries its story on the outside.

Kintsugimaker makes the cracks for you. Every ring has its own number, and the same number always gives the same ring – press "New ring" until one speaks to you, then draw cracks of your own or take away the ones you don't want. It prints the cracks at true size to wrap round the ring, and a card with the ring's name to give with it.

What it does

  • The ring – size, width, thickness and profile: flat, D-shaped or comfort fit.
  • The cracks – clean breaks, craquelure, a shattered blow, cracks along the band or all at once, with how many, how they branch, how jagged and how slanted.
  • Damage – nicks in the edge where the cracks can start, and dents in the surface.
  • The gold – wire inlaid in a groove, cut through and soldered, or wire soldered on top, in 24k to 14k gold, with the weight, the wire to buy and what it costs.
  • Draw your own – drag a crack across the unrolled band and it comes out naturally uneven, or click one to remove it.
  • Checks – kinks too sharp for the wire to follow, a wire too thick for the band, cracks that would cut the ring apart.
  • Template and card, 1:1 – the band unrolled with every crack, to wrap round the finished ring or glue to the strip before bending, and a ring card with its name and number.
  • My collection – keep the rings you like with a picture, mark them sold, and save or share the collection as a file.

Beta

Kintsugimaker is new. Check the first print against a ruler, and the strip round the ring, before you cut.
